Five Facts You Need to Know About the High Level Political Forum | Land Portal

1) What is the High Level Political Forum?

The High Level Political Forum (HLPF) is the main United Nations platform on sustainable development and will help to ensure the follow up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)! This will be the sixth session of the HLPF and it will be convened under the auspices of the UN ECOSOC.  The HLPF will be meeting in New York from Monday, 9 July, to Wednesday, 18 July 2018. The ministerial meeting of the forum will be from Monday, 16 July, to Wednesday, 18 July 2018.

2) What is the theme for this year’s High Level Political Forum?

This year’s theme is: "Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies".  With the economic, political, social and environmental changes taking place around the world, this theme is truly fitting and we look forward to seeing what’s in store!

3) What place has been given to land issues at the event?

The sub-set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be reviewed in depth by HLPF 2018 will be: SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation), SDG 7 (affordable and clean energy), SDG 11 (sustainable cities and communities), SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production), and SDG 15 (life on land). Goal 17 (Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development) is also considered each year.

To discover the eight targets and twelve indicators related to land within the SDGs, visit our SDGs section! If one thing is certain, it is that an integrated approach is crucial for progress across multiple goals.  What this means is that ensuring that specific land related targets under Goals 1 and 5 receive ample attention, will help to guarantee that all of the SDGs get met!

4) What role will the Land Portal play at the event to elevate land rights?

The Land Portal is excited to announce that it will be attending the HLPF 2018 and related side events!  We will be covering many of the Forum’s sessions, with a specific focus of course on land and tenure rights.  Our aim is to focus on SDG 15 Life on Land and to bring fresh content regarding the event directly to the Land Portal.

The Land Portal is also supporting the efforts of a civil society consortium to elevate land in the sustainable development goals, together with Oxfam Novib, Oxfam International, the International Land Coalition, Landesa, Huairou Commission, IPAR, Global Witness, Transparency International, Rights and Resources Initiative, ODI, Land Alliance International, World Resources Institute, We Effect, TMG Think Tank and ANGOC.  This group aims to work together and reiterate that sustainable development cannot be realized without secure and equitable tenure rights to land and natural resources. It is committed to scaling up efforts in tenure reforms that leave no one behind.

A dedicated side event on the matter entitled “Accelerating Effective Implementation of SDGs through interlinkages and gender-sensitive, people-centered land governance and just land reform” will take place on Friday July 13th, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Conference Room A, United Nations Headquarters.
