Africa is the world's second-largest and second most-populous continent, after Asia. At about 30.2 million km² (11.7 million sq mi) including adjacent islands, it covers 6% of the Earth's total surface area and 20.4% of the total land area.[2] With 1.0 billion people (as of 2009, see table) in 61 territories, it accounts for about 14.72% of the world's human population.

Austrian Development Agency GmbH (ADA) is the operational unit of Austrian Development Cooperation. The goal of ADA is to improve conditions of life in developing countries and assist partner countries in their sustainable development. It also promotes projects in development communication and education in Austria to advance discussion on development cooperation.

Centre for Basic Research (CBR) is a Non-Governmental Organization, (NGO), established in 1987 and a member institute of the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA).

CBR's mission is to spearhead the generation and dissemination of knowledge by conducting research of social, economic and political significance to Uganda in particular and Africa in general, so as to influence policy, raise consciousness and improve the quality of life. In this way CBR has also nurtured researchers in Uganda and elsewhere.

The Rainforest Foundation UK (RFUK) is a non-profit NGO working in Africa and South America. It is one of the first international organizations to support the indigenous peoples of the world's rainforests in their efforts to protect their environment and fulfill their rights to land, life and livelihood. The Foundation aims to protect rainforests by securing the land rights of indigenous peoples and other forest-dependent communities. It also campaigns internationally on issues such as industrial logging, climate change, agricultural expansion and nature conservation.

Africa Spectrum is published by the GIGA Institute for African Affairs (IAA) in Hamburg since 1966. It is a peer-reviewed open access journal dedicated to original research on the politics, societies, and economics of sub-Saharan Africa. As a multidisciplinary journal, Africa Spectrum welcomes submissions employing a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches. This Journal is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Pambazuka News is an open access, Pan-African e-mail and online electronic newsletter. It is published weekly in English, Portuguese and French by Fahamu. The word Pambazuka means 'dawn' or 'arise' in Kiswahili. Since its inception in 2000, its mission has been to provide a platform for social justice in Africa, for example, by promoting human rights for refugees. Pambazuka News provides commentary and analysis on politics and current affairs.
