LANDac, the Netherlands Academie on Land Governance for Equitable and Sustainable Development, is a partnership between Dutch organizations working on land governance. The partners are the International Development Studies (IDS) group at Utrecht University (leading partner), African Studies Centre, Agriterra, the Sociology of Development and Change (SDC) group at Wageningen University, the Land Portal Foundation, HIVOS, the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT), the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Enclude Solutions.
Displacement Solutions (DS) works with climate displaced persons, communities, governments and the UN to find rights-based land solutions to climate displacement. DS also works to empower displaced people and refugees to exercise their right to return and have restored to them their original homes, lands and properties through reliance on the right to restitution. DS works together with and on behalf of people who have been displaced not only by conflict, forced eviction or other human rights abuses, but also natural disaster, climate change or other circumstances beyond their control.
The impacts of climate change increasingly forces people away from their homes and livelihoods. Increased droughts force small-scale farmers to abandon their land and the rising sea level pushes poor families living in delta cities away from their homes.
This seminar starts with a brief discussion of climate displacement: What is climate displacement? How does it materialize in different settings? We then turn to a discussion of climate displacement within the current development agenda: The growing global problem of climate displacement has yet to receive the political and legal attention it deserves, particularly given the mass scale that this form of displacement will take. One approach to the issue of climate displacement focuses on how best to both prevent it, and when prevention fails, what to concretely do to assist climate displaced persons.
This seminar will explore the particular land dimensions of climate displacement and how and where land fits into the list of policy options designed to best protect the rights of those affected.
