The present “Supplement to the Report on the 1990 WCA” presents the census results collected from the reports issued by the countries that conducted censuses during the 1986-1995 decade and made them available to FAO after mid-1997.

This paper presents an overview of the various approaches that developed and developing countries have used in designing national forest funds. It is based on a study of legislation in over forty countries and a review of some of the few empirical studies of forest fund performance. The overview may serve as checklist of issues and options for policymakers who are designing funds.

The paper examines how derived rights have evolved through settlement, loan, rental or purchase contracts and how these arrangements have developed as a result of national policy and socio-economic history. It goes on to examine how the unique circumstances of "established" and "pioneer" farming areas show differing patterns of change in arrangements over time.

This paper examines the evidence for land degradation in Burkina Faso, and argues that local farming practices are not as unsustainable and environmentally destructive as many reports suggest.Main findings of the study include:there is little evidence of widespread degradation of crop and fallow land in Burkina Faso; the low external input practices used by West African farmers are not leading

Community-based forest management has emerged in the past decade as an effective approach for the management of tree and forest resources.

The first part of the report analyses the current uses and importance of forest products in the country followed by a special review on wood production and its uses. The later part looks into the collection, analysis and dissemination process and evaluates the methodologies used during the process.
