Utilizing Emerging Technology to Streamline Good Land Governance

Inefficient and inaccurate land registry systems, lack of standardization and transparency, and loss of paperwork remain common challenges to good land governance around the world. Medici Land Governance (MLG) seeks to overcome these barriers through blockchain and other technologies such as drones, cryptography, and Artificial Intelligence to provide user-friendly, low-cost land administration systems. 

 

 

In Rwanda, MLG is partnering with the government to pilot entirely paperless registration of land transactions. They are recording key authorizations and approvals on blockchain to prevent the double selling of land, impersonation of buyers and sellers, and the forgery of signatures. In Liberia, MLG is streamlining a systematic land titling system and a land administration system to formally recognize and record the rights of Liberian landowners. Other projects include Zambia, where a 10-year project in conjunction with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources will eventually lead to the issuance of millions of land titles. Within the United States, MLG made Teton County, Wyoming the first county in the USA with blockchain-registered land and in New York City, MLG partnered with the NYC Department of Finance (DOF) to develop a proof of concept for the use of blockchain technology to detect and reduce deed fraud.

 

This webinar shared the latest results from MLG’s work over the past several years in using emerging technologies to streamline good land governance. The panel discussed access (to internet, electricity, mobile phones), trust, lack of provable identification, secure data storage, and continuity of service and maintenance of technology.
