The main reason and the purpose of the National Forest Programme is harmonisation with other national policies and international commitments, and thus to contribute to an important segment of the sustainable development strategy in the country.Chapter 4 lays down provisions relating to the Vision and the essential objectives of the present Programme. In particular, the vision is stated as follows: 1) To ensure sustainable development of forests and ecosystems in the sense of their biodiversity and all their ecological, production and social functions with sustainable and multipurpose management; 2) Permanent contribution of forests to the economic development of the society, in particular rural areas, with the acquisition and use of forest goods, which will be adjusted to their sustainable reproducibility; 3) Permanent contribution of forests to healthy living environment and social development of the society.The essential objectives of the National Forest Programme are: 1) Sustainable development of forest as an ecosystem in the sense of its biodiversity and all its ecological, economic and social functions; 2) Preservation and development of wild animals and their habitats; 3) Sustainable use of all material goods of forest for the owner, development of rural areas and the entire society; 4) Sustainable wild game management; 5) Efficient system of communication with forest owners and the public, which ensures successful development of forests; 6) Favourable political, legislative and institutional environment which will support sustainable management of forests and their multipurpose use.Chapter 6 deals with environmental aspects of Slovenian forests, such as forest and nature conservation, forests and climate change, protective purpose of forests, preservation of health and vitality of forests, assessment of development potential. Section 3 of this Chapter concerns Objectives, guidelines and indicators and contains the following sections: Forest and climate change; Protective purpose of forests; Protection of land against erosion; Importance of forests for good condition of waters; Climatic, hygienic and health function of forests; Importance of forests for the provision of healthy potable water; preservation of health and vitality of forests.Chapter 7 contains a section on Management of private forests and asserts the following objectives: 1) Improve organisation of forest owners; 2) Intensify education of forest owners and counselling; 3) Stop further fragmentation of forest holdings; Provide implementation of necessary cultivation and protective works in forests; 5) Provide implementation of works in technologically modern and safe way; 6) Incentives for forests in which ecological or social functions determine the manner of management; 7) Better participation of owners in the planning of the development of their forests; 8) Improve marketing of forest wood products, other forest products and functions of forests.Chapter 18 on Wild Game Management Programme outlines, inter alia, important fundamental premises for wild game management, and lays down provisions on Habitats of wild game in Slovenia, guidelines and conditions for the preservation and protection of wild game and their habitats, and provision of co-existence with humans.The text consists of 18 chapters as follows: Introduction (1); Reasons for the preparation of the National Forest Programme (2); Process of the preparation of the National Forest programme (3); Vision and essential objectives of the National Forest Programme (4); Slovenian forests and sustainable forestry (5); Environmental aspect of Slovenian forests (6); Economical aspect of Slovenian forests (7); Social aspects of forests (8); Public Forestry Service (9); Supervision in forestry (10); Education of forestry personnel (11); Education and training of forest owners (12); Public awareness raising and participation in decision-making (13); Research and development activity (14); Funding (15); Tax policy (16); International participation (17); Wild game management programme (18).
