A programme of systematic inventory of the soil and land resources of Kenya was initiated in 1972. It aimed at the mapping of the high and medium potential areas at scale 1: 100, 000 and of the low potential areas at scale 1: 250, 000. This first soil survey report deals with the Kindaruma area, covering some 300, 000 ha in the Eastern Province. Descriptions are given of climate, geology and vegetation. The soils are surveyed and mapped on reconnaissance level and details are given on mapping units, classification (FAO-system), fertility and physical and management aspects.

This Act amends the Land Husbandry Act 1969: in section 3 (2) (b) by deleting the words "of section 93 of the Constitution" and substituting the following therefor "of section 4 of the Land Act 1973"; in section 4 relative to consultation of local authorities by the Minister when making of Regulations in regard to a particular agricultural area; and by deleting section 5. Section 5 concerned consultation by the Minister when making Regulations.
Amends: Land Husbandry Act, 1969 (No. 22 of 1969). (1969-04-23)

The present soil survey is the first in a series of "reconnaissance soil surveys", with a multi-purpose land evaluation. A programme of systematic inventory of the soil and, land resources of the country was initiated by the Kenya Soil Survey in 1972, after strengthening with manpower and funds from the Netherlands Directorate for Development Co-operation through the "Kenya Soil Survey Project", of the then Soil Survey Unit of the National Agricultural Laboratories in Nairobi.
