These regional workshops respond to requests made by many member countries during the global training session held at FAO Headquarters in Rome in November 2003.

   1. Degradation of natural resources is a significant constraint to sustainable agricultural development in many developing countries. In particular, water scarcity is a major threat to achieving food security and reducing poverty. Better water management, therefore, is critical to reaching international targets to halve the proportion of people without access to drinking water by 2015.

Por lo tanto, las definiciones son los fundamentos de cualquier sistema de conocimiento e información. Las definiciones establecen límites conceptuales y contextuales en torno a los elementos de un grupo o subgrupo. La eficacia de una definición en un contexto dado, depende de su capacidad de contener al resto (de subgrupos o elementos) y evitar que éstos se adentren en los límites establecidos.

   This report presents the results of an extra budgetary project which analyses similarities and common approaches in European national forest legislation. The forest laws of 23 countries have been examined in order to find out whether provisions are made to put into practice the following three legal issues: (1) reforestation obligations after logging through final cutting or loss of forest cover due to fire and natural calamities, (2) regulations concerning public access to forests and (3) public use of non-wood forest products occurring on forest land.

   At the request of its member countries, FAO has been carrying out global forest resources assessments (FRA) since 1947, in collaboration with countries and other partners, notably the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The global FRA reports on the worldwide status and trends of forest resources, their management and uses. It is based on nationally validated data from national forest inventories and assessments.

Les définitions constituent, par conséquent, les fondements de tout système d’informations et de connaissances. Les définitions établissent les limites conceptuelles et contextuelles autour des divers éléments d’un sous-ensemble ou d’un ensemble de données. L’efficacité d’une définition dans un contexte donné dépend de sa capacité à empêcher que le reste (sous-ensembles ou éléments) ne filtre au-delà des limites établies.

    This paper examines the existing and potential connections between rural people and forests in the Kyrgyz Republic, with the aim of developing an improved understanding of the role and potential role of the forestry sector in poverty reduction.1 While the paper focuses on Kyrgyzstan, the wider aim is to show, building on some of the experiences of Kyrgyzstan, how the connections between forests and poverty reduction might be explored in West and Central Asia more generally.
