This book explores the relationship between gender and land, the gendered implications of globalisation on social relations and resource control, and the workings of global capital. Its central focus is examination of globalisation and how the associated changes in land use and tenure affect rural women. A parallel current is people’s resistance to global forces, frequently demonstrated through insistence on the uniqueness of their livelihoods.

This paper examines the productivity of hired and family labour and the determinants of the technical efficiency of fish farms in Ghana. A modified Cobb-Douglas stochastic frontier production function which accounts for zero usage of family and hired labour is employed on cross-sectional data of 150 farmers collected in 2007. The results reveal that family labour, hired labour, feed, seed, land, other costs and extension visit have a reasserting influence on fish farm production.

The White Nile flows though Uganda, Sudan, and Egypt. The Blue Nile starts in Ethiopia. Zaire, Kenya, Tanzanian, Rwanda, and Burundi all have tributaries, which flow into the Nile or into Lake Victoria.

This paper apples the principle of west –use accounts, developed in the first of the series, to the Volta River in West Africa. The Volta Basin covers six countries, with 85% of its area in Ghana and Burkina Faso.
Runoff in all three tributaries increases from 2-7% in the drier north to 12-26 % in the higher – rainfall south. Grassland is the dominant land use throughout Basin ranging from 76% of the Delta catchment in the south to 98% of the Arly catchment with corresponding water use of 55% and 92% of water used in each.

Most African countries underwent water legislation reform since the 1990s, through
which existing plural legal systems were changed into nation-wide permit systems, in
which the state acts as custodian of the nation’s water resources. Although globally
heralded as the best way to manage water resources within the broader context of
Integrated Water Resource Management, this project examines the problematic
implications of the new laws for the majority of the rural and peri-urban poor. Since time

Numerous pilot studies and case studies in the Volta Basin have evaluated practices, methods, and tools that could prove beneficial to others, both within the basin and outside of it. However, the question whether an intervention successfully applied in one location has a reasonable chance of success at any other location remains extremely difficult to answer.

With mixed crop-livestock systems projected to remain the main providers of food in the coming decades, opportunities exist for smallholders to participate and benefit from emerging crop and livestock markets in the Volta Basin. This project intends to identify, evaluate, adapt, and disseminate best-fit integrated rainwater management strategies (RMS), targeted to different biophysical and socio-economic domains.
