The factors influencing the size and shape of exptl. field plots (area of exptl. lot, soil types, trial objective, no. of replicates, and degree of accuracy and homogeneity of the exptl. material) for the execution of field expt. are discussed. The basic principles of the following different methods to determine plot size are described: max. curve method, method of Koch and Rigney, Hatheway's method, and the max. curve method using the multiple linear regression model. Some considerations are presented on the border effect and on plot size in bush and climbing bean trials.

Rice-fish farming: A food security alternative Rice-fish farming is a biological or clean production system that consists of the simultaneous farming of rice and fish on the same land and at the same time; in other words, in the plots flooded for rice cultivation. Soil management in the Altillanura of Colombia’s Eastern Plains The strategies used for adequate soil management for the Altillanura (high plains with flat topography) of Colombia’s Eastern Plains are reviewed to establish modern, efficient, and sustainable livestock systems in this region. Advances in technology development within the technical and scientific cooperation agreement signed between Colombia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR) and CIAT, as well as those of the Center’s Soils Project and several national institutions co-partners in the agreement.

White mold, caused by the fungus Sclerotinia (Whetzelinia) sclerotiorum, is distributed worldwide and has more than 300 hosts. It infects flowers, cotyledons, seeds, leaves or injured plant tissue. The disease can be controlled by crop rotation, flooding, reduced seeding rates, application of chemical products in the middle of the flowering period, modifying plant architecture and the use of resistant var. Many soil microorganisms are associated with sclerotia and may cause them to degrade or fan to germinate. The symptoms and damage caused by the disease are illustrated in color.
