The Case Study Workshop was organized with the objective of obtaining the necessary input the experts on different subject areas of water resources, subject those views and discussion among the stakeholder agencies, and synthesize the information to a report on the case study. The outcome of the Workshop would eventually transform into the contribution of Sri Lanka to the forst WWDR.
The problems that river basin institutions in the developed world successfully address?such as pollution, sediment buildup in rivers and the degradation of wetlands?are not the top priorities for Indian policy makers and people. The items that do top Indian agendas?providing access to water for drinking and growing food, eradicating poverty, and stopping groundwater overexploitation?are either unresolved in the developed world or have become irrelevant due to economic development.
The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) has, for many years, been involved in research on pesticide poisoning to analyse the reasons for the high number of pesticide poisoning cases in Sri Lanka and discuss ways of controlling the problem through changes in agricultural practices and community involvement. More recently, research has focused on risk factors for deliberate and occupational pesticide poisoning and on the impact that a shift towards Integrated Pest Management (IPM) will have on the health of farming families.
Increasing the area under irrigation and the widespread adoption of seed-fertilizer technology were the major factors that contributed to enhanced rice production in Sri Lanka, enabling the country to achieve self-sufficiency in rice. In recent years, there has been a shift in emphasis from expanding the irrigated land base to enhancing the productivity of irrigated land through diversification of agriculture and improvement of rice production, with better water management in irrigation schemes.
