In Lao PDR, climate change has resulted in higher temperatures, variable rainfall, longer dry seasons and droughts, and more severe and frequent flood and drought. Droughts and flooding harm agriculture, food security, forest and land use, water resources, energy, industries, public work and transportation, urban and public health.

    Indigenous peoples and other local communities (IPLCs) are essential for forests, climate, biodiversity, public health and a host of other local and global ecosystem services. Securing IPLC land rights, helping protect their lands from external threats and supporting their forest management efforts would allow IPLCs to contribute even more to these public goods. Evidence on IPLC forest management has been accumulating steadily over the last decade since this matter gained attention in the climate change policy circles.

    Tajikistan’s population is predominantly rural and largely dependent on agriculture. Agriculture accounts for a quarter of Tajikistan’s gross domestic product and export revenues, 39% of tax revenues, and half of total employment. Given the widespread migration of male Tajik workers overseas, women constitute the majority of employees (accounting for 53% of the economically active population in agriculture). Arable land is in short supply at 0.15 hectares (ha) per capita (rising to 0.20 ha per capita for the rural population).
