With around half of its land area still forested, Meghalaya – one of the eight states of Northeastern India - has high potential for the development of forest-based enterprises. There are, however, various constraints to the development of forest-based enterprises as demonstrated by the noticeable underdevelopment of industries in the state and the dearth of information regarding the status of existing forest-based industries - an important element to guiding targeted interventions.

The Political Economy of India's Growth and Economic Policy since Independence
Rapports et recherchesDocuments de politique et mémoiresdécembre, 2008Inde, Asie méridionaleRapid growth since 1980 has transformed India from the world's 50th ranked economy in nominal U.S. dollars to the 10th largest in 2005. The growth of per capita income has helped reduce poverty. At the same time, evidence suggests that income inequality is rising and that the gap in average per capita income between the rich and poor states is growing. This paper reviews India's long term growth experience with a view to understanding the determinants of growth and the underlying political economy.

We quantify the emergence of biofuel markets and its impact on U.S. andworld agriculture for the coming decade using the multi-market multi-commodityinternational FAPRI model. The model incorporates the tradeoffs between biofuel, feed, and food production and consumption and international feedback effects of theemergence through world commodity prices and trade. We examine land allocation bytype of crop, and pasture use for countries growing feedstock for ethanol (corn, sorghum, wheat, sugarcane, and other grains) and major crops competing with feedstockfor land resources such as oilseeds.

A case study of smallholder dairying in India
Documents de politique et mémoiresdécembre, 2008Asie méridionale, Asie, IndeContract farming is emerging as an important form of vertical coordination in the agrifood supply chain in India, and its socioeconomic consequences are attracting considerable attention in public policy debates. This study is an empirical assessment of the costs and benefits of contract farming in milk using information generated through field surveys in the western state of Rajasthan. Contract farming is found to be more profitable than independent production. Its major benefits come from a reduction in marketing and transaction costs, which are otherwise much higher in the open markets.
