In this research the potential of grain production increase in Latvia is analysed. The land use analysis show that even in some nearest years it is possible to increase grain production by 400-500 thousand tons compared by 2010 level, but in 10 years period – by 1 million tons or more. This is due to increase both areas and yield. It is assessed during of the research that price above 90 Lats/t for wheat and above 80 Lats/t for barley, rye and oats stimulates grain production. Also some additional state regulation measures are recommended in the research.

The results of birth growth investigation in the 9 year old plantation on the abandoned podzolic soils of agriculture lands are assumed. The planting density was 1100; 1600; 2500; 5000 and 1000 plants per hectare. The average heights have reached 5.31 and 5.36 m, but average DBH 5.38 and 5.36 cm in the plots with 10 000 and 5000 trees per hectare accordingly. The average height has reached 6.47; 6.65 and 6.73 m but average DBH 7.17; 6.67 and 7.38 cm in the plots with 2500; 1000 and 111 trees per hectare accordingly.

Attempts to estimate the allowable maximum population density is well known in the history of game management in Latvia. Relatively permanent environmental features (e. g. landscape and forest structure) have been used for the assessment of carrying capacity of hunting grounds. Amount of the available winter feed was considered as a limiting factor for major game species in each landscape unit and forest type. While focusing on the actual abundance of feed, many other factors, including mutual interaction among species and populations, were overlooked.

Cadastral valuation model for building land has been approved by Regulations of Cabinet, and is expressed by a mathematical formula. The elements of cadastral valuation model for building land are the following: the base value of the building land, the land area under jurisdiction conditioned by the purpose of use, correction coefficient of the area, the correction coefficient accounting for the changes in the market, the correction coefficient of encumbrances and the correction coefficient of pollution.

The Promotional Paper Forest Land Transformation in Latvia by Gunta Bāra has been developed at the Forest Faculty of the Latvian University of Agriculture between 2001 and 2007. Goal of the Promotional Paper: to identify the main problems in transformation of forest land in the Republic of Latvia and gaps in legislative instruments regulating the process of change of land use type, to prepare recommendations for their elimination, to develop a methodology for calculation of compensation for the losses caused to the state as a result of destruction of natural forest environment.

Changes in soil morphological, physical and chemical properties as a result of establishing forest on agricultural lands were studied using as an example the lands naturally overgrowing in different periods of time by Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst.), silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.), grey alder (Alnus incana (L.) Moench) and aspen (Populus tremula L.). The research results showed that the soil with a texture of sandy loam and loam retains the morphological properties of agricultural land for up to 100 years.

Human attitude to the land is the base for existence of humanity. It widely affects everybody– environment and landscape is changed, new buildings are constructed, new villages are developed in countryside. If such recensions aren’t planned it can cause serious problems in nearest future, considering limitedness and great significance of the land as unique resource. For correction of errors in land use immeasurable resources and decennaries are necessary. Tendencies in land use development and related problems concern to all people of Latvia, especially landowners.

Study was conducted in north-eastern Latvia (57° 38’ N, 22° 17’ E): in a part of Slitere National Park that was un-managed since year 1923 and affected by large storm in November of 1969. Supervised classification of Corona and Landsat 5 images of the area (in total 1646 ha) from years before and after the storm (1966–2010) were carried out and parameters characterizing the fragmentation calculated for 3 land-cover classes: forest, areas with low woody biomass and non-forest areas.

In Latvia the construction of new transport infrastructure objects or reconstruction of existing ones increasingly generates necessity to expand an area of land under auto roads (right of way), as well as activates necessity of efficiency of real property expropriation process. In frame of research the correlation between expropriated land and total area of affected land parcels have been analyzed in two different projects of road development – project of new road and project of road reconstruction.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the structure of forest landscape and its impact on biodiversity in the Bauska District, Latvia. The database of the State Forest Service and field research from 1994 to 2004 were used. Diversity and protection of the current forest ecosystems were described using different forest classification methods. The structure of tree species and their age was analyzed. Analysis indicated a decrease of oak forests by 3.5% of their native vegetation area and a high proportion of drained forests, as well as a disproportional age structure of forest ecosystems.
