This brief discusses how gender perspectives are being integrated in Nepal's forest policies, laws and regulations in terms of women's representation, participation, access and decision-making in forest use and management. The brief also highlights the key challenges that prevail and outlines recommendations to promote gender mainstreaming further in forestry.
Community Forestry (CF) can play a fundamental role in achieving nearly all the SDGs through its focus on improving livelihoods, strengthening local governanceand, halting deforestation and improving forest quality.Various experiences of CF in the region have demonstrated that the allocation of forest management rights and responsibilities to local people is an effective strategy for sustainable forest management and provides potential contribution to improved outcomes for forest cover and condition and local livelihoods.
REDD+ scheme is primarily aimed at national governments and local forest managers to reduce emissions by conserving forests; at the same time, increasing investment on capacity developmen for grassroots stakeholders who are the main forest stewards provides opportunities for the grassroots actors to enhance their understanding and skills on REDD+ and be the voices of their community to safeguard their interest and benefits.
March 2014 – In 2012, Landesa and the government of West Bengal, India, entered an innovative partnership aimed at using land to reduce risks facing rural adolescent girls, including poverty, malnutrition, lack of education, and early marriage. This paper addresses pilot project features including girls groups, peer leader methodologies, community engagement, a land rights and land-based livelihoods curriculum, and partnerships with government stakeholders.
March 2014 – Inheritance is the overwhelming way land is acquired in India, but societal practices exclude women from inheriting land. The Hindu Succession (Amendment) Act 2005, an inheritance law that covers 83.6% of the population of India, corrected some fundamental inequalities in the law bringing the women in equal status to men in the right to inherit land. However, eight years after its enactment, the ground reality is that women still do not inherit land on an equal basis with men.

This document is the culmination of a year-long exercise of a community-led process for ground truthing the violations of environmental conditions laid out in the Coastal Regulation Zone approval for a large infrastructure, coal handling and port facility in the Mundra region of Kutch district in the western Indian state of Gujarat. The importance of WLR has been discussed in the context of agriculture; poverty reduction; reduction in gender based violence; women’s well-being and agency.This policy brief outlines the gaps that exist in the realisation of women’s land rights on agricultural land and calls for immediate collective action aimed at removing the structural barriers in inheritance, leasing, and joint ownership of privately held land in favour of women.
This monitoring framework prepared by Center for Land Governance, NRMC, Bhubaneswar with the support of The World Bank, New Delhi which envisages on reliable and accessible appropriate data set, well laid out procedure to calculate and report Women Land Rights (WLR) indicators across administrative layers as well as an institutional mechansim to sustainably carry out this process to address regular monitoring of WLR in Indian context to meet the SDG requirement.
This is the proceedings of a Workshop organized at India International Center, Lodi Road, New Delhi, India by Center for Land Governance, NRMC, Bhubaneswar with the support of The World Bank, New Delhi. In this workshop, the study team shared the state and district-wise WLR maps segregated across caste and economic categories along with temporal trend. Usefulness and relevance of Agriculture Census data, Status of women pattwaris, Inter-state variations around women’s land rights parameters, Operational holdings and tenancy were discussed by the participating experts.
