Resource-poor farmers in developing nations cultivate marginal lands, thereby exacerbating the problem of soil degradation through poor plant growth and ground coverage. An assessment of ground cover under such a practice will provide a guideline for soil conservation. Ground cover by leguminous cover crops (e.g., Mucuna pruriens, Pueraria phaseoloides and Vigna unguiculata), associated with yam, maize and rice was measured in three different experiments in southwestern Nigeria using beaded-string method while leaf area was measured using a flat-bed scanner.

Stochastic frontier analysis was used to examine input demand elasticities and determinants of technical inefficiency of rainfed farmers in Nigeria. Allocative efficiency of the factor inputs was computed using the marginal value product. Our results show that herbicide has the highest elasticities. It is followed by seeds, fertilizers and land. Labour has the least contribution to the output. None of the respondents optimally allocated the inputs. A large number of the farmers underutilized the variables land, seeds, fertilizer and herbicide, whereas numerous farmers over-utilized labour.

The paper presents a "Watershed Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) Model "for the Olifants River Catchment." A CGE provides an appropriate framework in which to explore policy alternatives for achieving more efficient water and land use.

This paper examines the productivity of hired and family labour and the determinants of the technical efficiency of fish farms in Ghana. A modified Cobb-Douglas stochastic frontier production function which accounts for zero usage of family and hired labour is employed on cross-sectional data of 150 farmers collected in 2007. The results reveal that family labour, hired labour, feed, seed, land, other costs and extension visit have a reasserting influence on fish farm production.

Financial cooperatives and microfinance institutions (MFIs) are the two major sources of rural finance in Ethiopia. Whereas MFIs are relatively new, financial cooperatives have existed for centuries in various forms. The coexistence of two different institutions serving the same group of people, and delivering the same financial services, raises several policy questions. Those questions have become particularly relevant, as the government has embarked on developing a new strategy for improving rural financial services delivery.

The cotton boom in Burkina Faso consisted of a growth in cotton land shares together with an overall increase intotal cultivated land. This paper examines the impact of institutional changes in the cotton sector on theevolution of smallholders’ land-use decisions. The empirical analysis is supported by a structural model thattakes into account the specific institutional features of the Burkinabè cotton sector and builds upon household leveldata collected in rural Burkina Faso.
