Laos plans to graduate from least developed country status by 2024. To spur economic growth, the Lao government builds on a resource-based export economy, major mining projects, the constructions of dams, and the expansion of plantation agriculture. A key focus is the promotion of foreign direct investment in agriculture and forestry, to promote technology transfer for intensification of the agricultural sector and thus employment and income for the rural population. However, agriculture and forestry investment projects are placing growing pressure on land as a resource.

    Iraq

Iraq is one of the easternmost countries of the Arab Region. It is bordered to the north by Turkey, to the east by Iran, to the west by Syria and Jordan, and to the south by Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

The current land systems in Iraq are greatly influenced by social and political insecurity and multiple waves of forced displacement over the last years, which have contributed to land tenure insecurity and land use conflicts.

Land tenure is a particularly important issue in Asia, a region most prone to natural disasters and the impacts of climate change, and home to the world’s poorest who depend on land for their life and livelihoods. However, public understanding of the links between climate change, disasters, and land tenure is still very limited, even among development organizations. This issue brief is edited from the publication, “No Time to Waste: Climate action through secure land rights and sustainable land use,” that seeks to train the spotlight on specific issues of land tenure, land use and climate cha
