This is a weighty report of formidable bulk and understandably so. Rarely has a Workshop in Bangladesh or anywhere else been so comprehensive in mandate or assembled such an array of fisheries expertise. Why was the workshop held? Quite simply, to give effect to Bangladesh's vision of fisheries development and management, set forth in its Perspective Development Plan for 1995-2010.

As a large proportion of the rural private sector, forest and farm producers are the primary actors in rural transformation and sustainable development. They possess knowledge and experience essential to shaping effective successful policies and actions. Through its support to local and national producer organizations, the Forest and Farm Facility (FFF) is working to ensure forest and farm producers are involved in national decision-making processes that impact their livelihoods and the sustainable management of forests, in turn helping to achieve many of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Netherlands became an FAO member in 1945, and has since been a valuable resource partner on multiple FAO projects and programmes. The Netherlands shares FAO’s continued interest in developing programmes for the financial inclusion of family farmers, especially women, by treating them as entrepreneurs and promoting their access to better credit and resilience. The Netherlands is also one of FAO’s largest donors for locust control issues.

Unprecedented pressures on land have been created as new areas are cultivated, taken over by expanding urban centres or are abandoned due to degradation, climate change and conflict. These developments have strained the rules, processes and institutions that determine which land resources are used, by whom, for how long and under what conditions.

As this book shows, farmer field schools have proven to be a very useful approach for helping African farmers to improve how they manage their land and water. Numerous projects throughout Africa have shown that they result in improved soils, better yields and higher incomes for farmers. The document summarizes some of these experiences, points out successes, and – equally important – shows constraints and gaps that need to be addressed.

Small forest and farm producers manage a third of the world’s forests. Together, these smallholder families, indigenous people and local communities are the world’s largest investors in forests. They are key to sustainable forest and farm management and have a critical role to play in the success of global concerns such as Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+), climate change adaptation and green growth. Yet all too often their voices go unheard.
