Econometric and simulation analyses indicate that land degradation does not threaten agricultural productivity growth and food security at the global level, but problems exist in some areas. Improving market performance could reduce erosion-induced yield losses to 0.1 percent per year and the number of hungry people in less-developed countries by 5 percent over 10 years.

This paper explores the extent to which preference asymmetries occur in Likert-scale indicators of support or opposition to rural land use policies, and implications for methods used to model policy support. Data are drawn from responses to the Rhode Island Rural Land Use Survey.

Although there is broad agreement that well functioning land rental markets will play an important role to increase productivity and household welfare as agrarian economies develop, evidence from Africa on the actual performance and impact of such markets is limited. We use data from Uganda to test for differences in the performance of rental, as compared to sales markets and their evolution over time, based on a framework where markets are affected by differences in ability and imperfections in rural labor and capital markets.

In many river floodplains in the UK there has been a long history of flood defence, land reclamation and water regime management for farming. In recent years, changing policies with respect to farming, environment and flood management is encouraging a re-appraisal of land use in rural areas. In particular, there is scope to develop, through the use of appropriate promotional mechanisms, washland areas which will simultaneously accommodate winter inundation, support extensive farming methods, deliver environmental benefits, and do this in a way which can underpin the rural economy.

Based on a spatiotemporal hedonic farmland price model and county-level data in Illinois from 1979 to 1999, we examined the impact of swine production on farmland values. Our results show that, in addition to the conventional determinants of farmland values, an increase in swine production intensity has a negative relationship with farmland values while an increase in swine operation scale had a positive association with farmland values at the county level in Illinois.

Although soil fertility is recognized as a primary constraint to agricultural production in developing countries, use of fertilizer in Sub-Saharan Africa is declining. Smallholder farmers still rely heavily on livestock manure for soil fertility management. To explore the determinants of soil fertility management practices, including both the use of cattle manure and inorganic fertilizer, data are used from a sample of 3,330 geo-referenced farm households across Central and Western Kenya. A bivariate probit model is applied to jointly examine the use of the two technologies.

The paper considers the econometric modeling of technology adoption when crop choice is simultaneous. Bivariate probit is used to estimate a model of irrigation technology choice and land allocation using a unique field-level data set from California's Central Valley. Special attention is paid to the proper calculation of marginal effects in the bivariate probit model, which are often useful for policy purposes. Estimation results confirm that the choices of irrigation technology and land allocation are simultaneous.

The U.S. will soon see many farmers retire and younger farmers taking their place. These younger farmers would prefer to purchase the land rather than rent because of the advantages associated with ownership. However, these farmers need to determine how many acres they need to rent in order to support their purchased land and still provide funds for family living. The model developed here is applied to a typical farm in the Midwest. The results indicate that cash rent is a key element of the model.

A hedonic pricing analysis in Berks County, Pennsylvania showed that houses located near open space had higher prices, but that the type of open space matters. At the same time, proximity to potential disamenities, including landfills, large animal production facilities, mushroom production operations, and the county's airport, was found to depress house prices.

Adhering to planning ethics is especially relevant when flood control planning of communities who settled in flood plains is at stake. Soweto-On-Sea (SOS) is an informal settlement in the flood plain of the Lower Chatty River near Port Elizabeth. As part of a research project which compared palaeoflood and conventional flood hydrology in the planning of flood control measures for SOS within a Cost Benefit Analytical (CBA) framework attention was also given to some ethical considerations.
