In the framework of the National Proyect: "Tipification, Cartography and Evaluation of Spanish Pastures" (INIA 00T00-037-C17-08) and Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha, 2001-2004), promoted by the Spanish Society of Pastures Studies, "dehesas" areas are obtained depending on the uses of different cartographic sources. A comparative analyze has been carried out in Toledo province (Spain). Data used were obtained from the Spanish Forestry Map, the CORINE-LAND COVER 2000 proyect and Cadastral information.

We used Ricardian framework with heterogeneous land quality to analyse how policies used to support farm incomes, reduce negative agri-environmental externalities and enhance the provision of positive externalities influence land allocation decisions and land prices. Four agri-environmental policy instruments are considered: a uniform area payment, a quality-dependent area payment, a mandatory buffer strip policy and a voluntary buffer strip payment. We also analyse how general tax and monetary policies may affect agricultural land prices.

Whatever You Thought, Think Again
Documents et rapports de conférenceseptembre, 2005Afrique, Afrique sub-sahariennePaul Wolfowitz, President of the World Bank, congratulated the editorial team of National Geographic for the special issue on Africa. National Geographic has played a unique role in broadening the knowledge of the world. The World Bank partnered with National Geographic to produce a full-color wall map to raise awareness of the millennium development goals (MDGs) and to highlight each country's progress. We often hear about an Africa that is ravaged by poverty, disease and conflict. There is another face to Africa, one of hope, ambition, energy, intelligence and achievement.

Complexity of urban systems necessitates the consideration of interdependency among various factors for land use change modeling and prediction. The objective of this study is to explore the applicability of computational neural networks in modeling urban sprawl and land use change coupled with geographic information systems (GIS) in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. We are particularly interested in the capabilities of neural networks to identify land use patterns, to model new development, and to predict future change. A binary logistic regression model is estimated comparison.

This article solves and characterizes optimal decision rules to invest in irreversible land improvements conditional on land tenure insecurity. Economic model is a normative dynamic programming model with known parameter for the one period returns and transition equations. The decision rules are solved numerically conditional on alternative scenarios on the likelihood that the lease contract and, thus, farmer access to land is either renewed or expires. The model parameters represent Finnish soil quality and production conditions.

Without support, the levels of agricultural public goods will fall short of the demand in high cost countries like Norway, Finland and Iceland. However, as demonstrated in this paper using Norway as a case, the current support and agricultural activity is far out of proportions from a public goods perspective. Model simulations show that at most 40% of the current support level can be defended by the public good argument. Furthermore, the present support, stimulating high production levels, is badly targeted at the public goods in question.

This presentation provides comparative analysis of agricultural holdings in Estonia based on the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) data. The FADN data for reference years 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 have been analysed. The FADN data analyses showed, that there are very big differences in the structure of the agricultural holdings. Individual farms represent ca 92% of the total population of agricultural producers but at the same time their part in total production attains less than 50% according to the FADN data for year 2003.
