The aim of the program is to directly strengthen essential land governance components for men, women and youth that have the potential to contribute to structural, just, sustainable and inclusive change at scale in lower- and middle-income countries/regions/landscapes. The program is designed to scale successful land governance initiatives and to generate and disseminate lessons learned to facilitate further scaling.

Applying participatory mapping in conflict-affected settings.
Documents et rapports de conférencemars, 2019Afrique orientaleThis paper engages with innovative ways to apply participatory mapping techniques and the latest technological tools in fragile, conflict-affected settings to contribute to sustainable land use. In this paper, the authors describe in detail the process and purpose of a participatory mapping project in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and elaborate on the lessons learned so far. The paper concludes with a set of recommendations to take the process forward for greater sustainability and long-term land rights protection.

AFRA is an independent land rights non-governmental organization that works with black rural people in KwaZulu-Natal who were dispossessed and whose land tenure rights remain insecure. As such AFRA engages with the different programs within Land Reform, one of which is the Restitution Program. AFRA works primarily with three claimant groups, the Boschoek claimants, the Dukuduku claimants and the Gongolo claimants, each described briefly below.

One of the groups, the Lord’s Resistance Army, orchestrated brutal mass murders and abductions forcing nearly two million people to live internally displaced people’s (IDP) camps for over 10 years. The war particularly affected the people of Acholi and Lango sub-regions which had previously suffered sporadic attacks by armed Karamajong cattle rustlers from north eastern Uganda.

The annual meetings of this project concentrate on narrowly defined aspects of expropriation, and facilitate discussion amongst international academics and other experts on shared issues in Expropriation Law. The project gives delegates the opportunity to participate on the global platform, alongside leading scholars in the field of expropriation law.
