It took scientists more than three decades to transform a perceived desertification crisis in the Sahel into a non-event. Looking beyond the Sahel, the chapters in this book provide case studies from around the world that examine the use and relevance of the desertification concept.

The habitat of tsetse fly (Glossina spp.) depends upon climatic conditions, host availability and land cover characteristics. In this paper, the Land Cover Classification System (LCCS), developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is proposed as a tool to harmonize land cover mapping exercises carried out in the context of tsetse and trypanosomiasis (T&T) research and control.

The growing volume of spatially explicit environmental information, combined with the widening utilization of GIS, allows ecological and socioeconomic factors to be integrated more fully into the decision-making process, thus laying the foundation for a holistic approach to development.
