    This volume examines and evaluates the impact of international statebuilding interventions on the political economy of conflict-affected countries over the past 20 years.     Fragility has become the reality in several countries of the Middle East and North Africa. Armed conflict and forced displacement are taking an enormous toll on human lives, with the region accounting for about 60 percent of the estimated global total of battle-related casualties since the turn of the millennium. Conflicts and fragility have also had negative economic impacts, with countries directly affected by conflict such as Syria and Yemen losing as much as half of their pre-war GDP.

They provide a variety of wood and non-wood products and vital ecosystem services – preventing erosion from wind and water, preserving water quality, shading crops and livestock, absorbing carbon which contributes to countering climate change, and providing habitat for many species of plants and animals, thus helping to conserve the planet’s biological diversity.

    The case-study presents the case of the appropriation of pastoral lands by the coming of large-scale extractive industries in Turkana, Kenya. The case-study is meant to raise awareness among the general audience regarding the precarious situation of the pastoralists in the context of this new socio-economic development and lack of secure land tenure. At the same time, it provides this information as a case to local and global civil society, experts, institutions and policy makers.
