An international workshop on Forest and Land Tenure Reform was held in Vientiane on 28-29 August, 2012. The workshop was hosted by the National Assembly of Lao PDR, with support from RECOFTC – The Center for People and Forests through the Rights and Resources Initiatives (RRI). The Third Regional Forum for People and Forests was organized by RECOFTC – The Center for People and Forests in collaboration with the Royal Forest Department, the Asia-Pacific Network for Sustainable Forest Management and Rehabilitation (APFNet), the ASEAN Social Forestry Network (ASFN), and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), along with support from Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC) and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

In this 2012 edition of Moving Forward, FAO Forestry is pleased to present a selection of the work it undertook in the 2010-2011 biennium for the benefit of the global forestry community. The FAO Forestry Programme encompasses a vast range of activities and projects, of which this booklet presents only a sample. In all regions of the world, the Programme is helping to implement sustainable forest management and boost the livelihoods of forest-dependent people. It does this, in part, by improving information on forests.
How does the World Trade Organization's (WTO) Agreement on Agriculture (AOA) affect the livelihoods of rural women in Asia? This paper, prepared on the occasion of the WTO-AOA review in 2003, analyzes the impact of the new trading rules imposed by the WTO on Asian peasants. It illustrates the inherent imbalances in the WTO-AOA's trade liberalisation policies which, among other things, flood local markets with highly subsidized agricultural imports from developed countries to the detriment of domestic agriculture.
