    Maize is a key global cash crop, produced in every continent except Antarctica. As a flex crop, it has multiple uses including for direct human consumption, as an ingredient for animal feed, as a key component in processed foods, or in ethanol production. According to figures from FAOSTAT, global production increased from 0.2 to 1.2 billion tons between 1961 and 2020.

    The forum was co-hosted by the Mekong Region Land Governance Project and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Co-Conveners of the programme includes the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE), University of Bern, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für International Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the Regional Center for Social Science and Sustainable Development (RCSD) and the Independent Mediation Group (IMG). The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg supported the Forum.

    An international workshop on Forest and Land Tenure Reform was held in Vientiane on 28-29 August, 2012.     The Third Regional Forum for People and Forests was organized by RECOFTC – The Center for People and Forests in collaboration with the Royal Forest Department, the Asia-Pacific Network for Sustainable Forest Management and Rehabilitation (APFNet), the ASEAN Social Forestry Network (ASFN), and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), along with support from Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC) and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

    This is the summary report of the forum.

    Groundwater recharge remains almost totally unknown across the Mekong River Basin, hindering the evaluation of groundwater potential for irrigation. A regional regression model was developed to map groundwater recharge across the Lower Mekong Basin where agricultural water demand is increasing, especially during the dry season. The model was calibrated with baseflow computed with the local-minimum flow separation method applied to streamflow recorded in 65 unregulated sub-catchments since 1951.

    The residents of the Ganges and Mekong River deltas face serious challenges from rising sea levels, saltwater intrusion, pollution from upstream sources, growing populations, and infrastructure that no longer works as planned. In both deltas, scientists working for nearly two decades with communities, local governments and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have demonstrated the potential to overcome these challenges and substantially improve people’s livelihoods.
