ICARDA’s West Asia Regional Program (WARP) coordinates agricultural research and development activities in Cyprus, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, the Palestinian Authority, Syria and lowland Turkey. With its head office in Amman, Jordan, the program plays a key role in joint bilateral and regional initiatives, as well as implementing several projects.
The year of 2008 marked the beginning of a new phase at ICARDA: the full implementation of the Center's Strategic Plan 2007-2016, and a renewed commitment to addressing the global challenges of food security, poverty alleviation and climate change in the dry areas. It was also a year of adversity, both locally and globally. At ICARDA's main research station in Syria, the 2007/2008 cropping season experienced drought combined with wide variations in temperature, falling to -12°C in winter and rising to 37°C in the early spring.
The study discusses land-degradation in pastoral communities and depicts land-use system and associated human and livestock population pressure as the major determinant of vegetation cover, surface run-off, soil erosion, and species richness. The study recommends use of enclosures to reverse range degradation, and diversification of pastoral economies to reduce poverty and relieve pressure on land as the primary source of livelihood in the semi-arid rangelands of Kenya
The livelihood of the Himalayan people depends on rangeland-based livestock farming in Nepal. Above 2500 m altitude, the contribution of rangelands to livestock feed supply is more than 65%. Rangeland comprises about 11.5% of the total land resources of Nepal and over 98% are located in high mountains and Himalayan regions. Nepal is rich in biodiversity, with over 6500 species of flowering plants, including 180 species of grasses and legumes.
The Agriculture Strategic Development Plan is a national policy with a multi-sectoral approach. The Timeframe of this Plan is 3 years between 2010 and 2012.
This paper examines the effect of climate change on pastoralist conflict in Africa. The rangelands of East Africa is particularly vulnerable to drought, which is associated with climate change. In this respect, the paper focuses its analysis on changes in resource availability contrasting cases of abundance and scarcity. The authors clarify that the role of resources is further contextualised by competing notions of property rights, and the role of the state in defining property and associated rights.
Se compararon dos manejos pratenses: pastoreo con vacunos y pastoreo con ovejas, en un suelo volcánico, del centro-sur de Chile, con los valores bioindicadores de Ellenberg establecidos para malezas europeas, que forman esas praderas. Se comprobó que el pastoreo con ovinos degrada el suelo y la cubierta vegetal mucho más que el pastoreo con bovinos, lo que se corresponde con las diferencias vegetacionales y edáficas establecidas por un estudio anterior mediante análisis edáficos y fitosociológicos.
En enero, abril y junio de 2003 se generaron series de tiempo de las tasas de pas toreo, ingesta y filtración de Acartia clausi utilizando el método de balance, en una estación de muestreo en la Bahía de La Paz, México. Asi mis mo, se determinaron los cambios de la temperatura superficial del mar y de la concentración de la clorofila a. Las tasas de filtración tuvieron cambios significativos (p<0.05) diarios en abril, pero no en enero y junio. En el caso de la tasa de pastoreo y la tasa de ingesta, la variación diaria fue significativamente distinta en los tres meses.
Con el objetivo de identificar las especies de roedores pequeños asociadas a un sistema de producción de ganado de leche ubicado en Turrialba, Cartago, Costa Rica, se muestreó durante los meses de mayo del 2007 a abril del 2008 un área de potrero con cobertura permanente de pasto estrella africana (Cynodon nlemfuensis), una área de instalaciones y un bosque secundario de 15 años.
La cuenca del río Los Puestos, área considerada en este trabajo, se sitúa en el extremo norte del departamento de Ambato, Catamarca, Argentina. Sus límites están establecidos por las formaciones pampeanas Ambato-Manchao (4.050 m.s.n.m.) al oeste, y por la sierra Graciana-Balcozna (1.850 m.s.n.m.) al este. En tanto, su límite sur lo constituye el valle de Catamarca y, hacia el norte, los Altos de Singuil. En la llanura aluvial del fondo del valle, corre de norte a sur el río Los Puestos, que nace en los Altos de Singuil, a 1.250 m.s.n.m. En este escenario, a partir del siglo VI d.C.
