This study was conducted to assess livestock feed sourcing and feeding strategies and their implications on livestock water productivity (LWP) in mixed crop-livestock production systems of the Blue Nile Basin (BNB) in Ethiopian Highlands. Three Woredas (Diga, Jeldu and Fogera) representing diverse agricultural farming systems were considered. One watershed in each Woreda, which is Dapo from Diga, Meja from Jeldu and Mizuwa from Fogera were selected. Each watershed further stratified to different farming systems depending on cropping pattern and landscape positions.

Sheep have multiple roles in the livelihood of resource poor farmers as source of income, meat, skin, manure, strong wool or long hairy fleece, and as buffer resources during crop failures. These important services and products of the sheep production sub-sector justify comprehensive look into the way sheep are marketed, as the services and products are the quality attributes that characterize sheep as such. Nonetheless, very few studies have been conducted so far to identify the determinants of indigenous sheep prices and performance of the marketing system.

Sheep production is an integral part of the subsistence crop-livestock systems of Ethiopian highlands and plays crucial role in economic development and poverty reduction. So far, there have been very limited efforts exerted to introduce and promote market oriented sheep production and hence the current income generating capacity of the sector is not at all encouraging. Therefore, reorientation of sheep production systems towards consumer preferences and demands through timely and comprehensive transformation need to be given due emphasis.

Faba bean (Vicia faba L.), also called broad bean or horse bean is an annual crop, which mainly grows in the highlands of Ethiopia for human consumption. The objective of this study was to improve the quantity and quality of forages produced from intercropping of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) with forage oats (Avena sativa L.) on forage biomass, straw, grain yields, and straw quality. Farmers have an experience of not weeding faba bean plots to get more weed biomass.

Small-ruminant production contributes significantly to the national and household economy in many countries. Small-ruminants are a key component of the livelihood systems in rural Ethiopia which substantially contribute to income, food, skin and wool, manure, serve as part of the crop failure risk-coping portfolio of enterprises, for asset wealth security as a form of saving money and social and cultural functions. This study analyzes hedonic price analysis of indigenous sheep and goats traits in two districts (Atsbi-Wemberta and Adwa) of eastern and central Tigray, northern Ethiopia.

In order to bring a realistic transformation in Ethiopian agriculture, farmers need to improve their knowledge, skill and attitude & have access to information and technologies, markets etc. Currently, Farmers Training Centres are designed to provide services of extension, trainings, demonstration, information, advice, etc at grassroots level. Modular training is one of the main functions of the centers. In the study area, modular training has been offered since 2007. However, evaluation was not made to determine effectiveness in terms of changes in farmers.
