    Large-scale land acquisitions have increased in scale and pace due to changes in commodity markets, agricultural investment strategies, land prices, and a range of other policy and market forces. The areas most affected are the global “commons” – lands that local people traditionally use collectively — including much of the world’s forests, wetlands, and rangelands. In some cases land acquisition occurs with environmental objectives in sight – including the setting aside of land as protected areas for biodiversity conservation.

    Rice terraces are paddy fields made on sloping land that follow the natural contour lines, suited to the Japanese landscape. The terraces blend in with the natural scenery and give viewers a great sense of peace and comfort. Rice terraces are also growing into a focus of agro tourism. However, farming on these rice terraces has low labor productivity, and with the advancing age of the farmers in the mountainous areas, it has become difficult for them to continue farming on the rice terraces. Their abandonment is now noticeable. For this research, one city sustaining the rice terraces viz.

    The developments of reclaimed farmlands were performed actively in Osaka in the Edo era. As a result the vast lands, which amounts to more than 20,000 ha, were produced, and it was happened to exert a great influence on urban development in the last part of the Meiji era. Because they were the reclamation of the shallow water and also, were under development by private capital that was called 'Chonin Ukeoi Shinden', reclaimed farmlands contracted by the trading class, the circumstances may be quite different from those of the inland rural areas.

    Preceding studies demonstrate that there are two important prerequisites that facilitate land rental in agriculture; one is outmigration of farm labor, and the other is the securement of farmers' land rights. This is especially true for the counties and/or regions where the farm sector is overemployed and farmland has yet to be privatized. Considering these empirical findings quite tenable, this paper pays special attention to rural shareholding cooperatives (RSCs) that have been established recently in rural China.

    This research focused on the hilly and mountainous area of Yame City, Fukuoka Prefecture, which suffered damage due to the heavy rains that occurred in the northern part of Kyushu in July 2012. The objective of this research was to identify the distribution of damage to agricultural land in the Yame City area and the districts in which it was concentrated. In addition to characterizing the damage, the research was aimed at revealing the activities of aid agencies.

    To prevent uncontrolled urban sprawl of rural area and promote desirable development, Korean government established 'Act on Planning and Use of National Territory' in 2003. However, despite improvement of the framework of land use system, urban sprawl and rural environment destruction is aggravating. Unlike Japan, there is no independent plan for managing farmland and forest in Korea. Local governments' land use plan also excessively focused on urban management. To prevent deteriorating rural amenity, it is desirable to induce more specific guideline for rural land use and development.
