This book explores the relationship between gender and land, the gendered implications of globalisation on social relations and resource control, and the workings of global capital. Its central focus is examination of globalisation and how the associated changes in land use and tenure affect rural women. A parallel current is people’s resistance to global forces, frequently demonstrated through insistence on the uniqueness of their livelihoods.

The project aims to create actionable policy proposals to make spaces of participation more effective in five countries in Latin America, and to contribute to the needs of existing social movements within their local contexts. Currently the study is mapping specific effects of implementation of participatory reforms on the distribution of power and resources in communities, the pathways through which such effects are produced, the accountability of domestic decision-makers, and impacts on successive iterations of legal reform.

By surveying the literature and examining the issues this study points to areas needing attention from researchers and policymakers.

Approximately 20% of novel emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) and 50% of emerging and re-emerging zoonotic diseases have been attributed to land-use change. It is a clear threat to global biodiversity and ecosystem services and a key driver of EIDs. The project investigates the mechanisms underlying disease emergence by assessing the impacts of land-use change, measured as forest fragmentation, on viral diversity and bat host assemblages.
