Rangelands in semi-arid Kenya have recently witnessed extensive land use changes. These changes
can mainly be attributed to increased livestock populations and the response of the increased human
population to both local and exogenous opportunities and constraints. This study was carried out in
Kibwezi district of Kenya mainly inhabited by agro-pastoralists. The main objective of this study was to
establish how different land use types influence soil properties in tropical semi-arid rangelands. -

Livestock production is the main source of livelihood in the arid and semi-arid lands in Africa. However, desertification characterized by vegetation degradation and soil erosion is a major threat to the sustainability of land-based production systems. Native rangeland forage species Cenchrus ciliaris L. (Buffel grass/African foxtail grass), Eragrostis superba Peyr. (Maasai love grass) and Enteropogon macrostachyus (Hochst. Ex A. Rich.) Monro ex Benth. (Bush rye grass) have been used to combat desertification.

This study determined the patterns and magnitudes of land cover
and use changes, their driving factors and impacts on soil quality
and pasture productivity in Nakasongola district. Satellite data
(1970 - 2009), surveys, soil and pasture sampling techniques

study to characterize existing adaptive strategies and shifts in smallholder agro-pastoralists in relation to changes in land use and land subdivisions was carried out. A total of 48.9% of respondent indicated that there had been a shift in the adaptive strategies where unreliable rainfall, better access to land and water, acquisition of skills, shortage of pastures and proximity to wildlife habitats were the main factors influencing the shifts.
