Markov chain analysis (one-step and long-run) is applied to the National Resources Inventory (NRI) database to evaluate changes in wind-based soil erosion rates over time. The research compares changes in soil erosion rates between NRI sample sites with and without applied conservation practices for a random sample of Great Plains counties. No significant differences between sites are found for half of the counties evaluated. The effectiveness and efficiency of conservation policies are thus questioned in light of these research results.

The world standards for patents and copyrights established by the Agreement on Trade-Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) have been controversial from their inception. Whereas a country’s tariffs lead to unintended harm to other countries, its intellectual property protection generates unintended benefits.

The paper examines the evolution of customary land tenure in Sarawak. It first reviews economic theory relating to the evolution of land tenure, then outlines the tenure system of the !ban, the major indigenous group in Sarawak. The impact of the Sarawak state on customary tenure is examined for the Brooke period (1841-1941), the British colonial period (1946-63) and particularly the period since the formation of Malaysia (1963 to present). The paper concludes that both economic and political factors have affected the evolution of property rights to land in Sarawak.
