This study focuses on the current situation, trends and likely developments of forest resources to 2010. Forest areas, growing stocks, increments and fellings are reviewed on a country basis. Roundwood supply is analysed from two points of view: roundwood production potential and roundwood felling (removal). The working paper attempts to assess the potential productive capacity and fellings for both fuelwood and industrial wood use taking account of the impact of changes in the agricultural frontier and population growth.

The paper stresses the importance of often neglected factors in policy formulation such as the need for clear property rights, the significance of fuelwood supply, the correct identification of affected parties and the accurate valuation of intangible benefits. The need for better resource information and the correct pricing of forest products are also seen as important in promoting sustainable forest management in the region
