    This FAO Legal Paper is the overall synopsis of a series of legal assessment reports that evaluate the laws and policies in the land, forestry and fisheries sectors in Sierra Leone and make recommendations to align them with the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT), which were endorsed by the Committee on World Food Security in May 2012.

    The Miombo woodland is a vast African dryland forest ecosystem covering close to 2.7 million km2 across southern Africa (Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe).     Soil loss is a major threat to the agricultural development in Malawi and by extension is also a major hindrance to the overall economic development of the country since the Malawian economy is dependent on agriculture. Not only does soil loss reduce the cultivable soil depth but it also takes away the fertile soils from the farmlands. The net effect is loss of agricultural productivity, increased expenditure on fertilizers, and a general decline in profitability of crop production.
