This country profile describes the state of the water resources and water use, as well as the state of agricultural water management in Somalia. The aim of this report is to describe the particularities of the country and the problems met in the development of the water resources, and irrigation in particular.
The Action Against Desertification (AAD) project supports eight ACP countries, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Gambia, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Fiji and Haiti in the sustainable management and restoration of degraded land. Baseline assessments have been carried out in each of these countries to establish a reference against which to monitor changes and project impacts, as well as to better target project activities and inform other stakeholders and restoration initiatives in these countries.

As water becomes scarcer in many countries, governments increasingly have to deal with the considerable challenges of water management. Sound information on water vailability and use is key to shaping water policies that aim to provide equitable and sustainable use of increasingly scarce water resources. Accurate information on agricultural water withdrawal is particularly important to planners and decision-makers involved in water management, as agriculture represents the largest water us er in many countries, representing about 70 percent of total withdrawal worldwide.
The present study, by the Chief of the Agrarian and Water Law Section of the FAO Legislation Branch, is intended to explore in greater depth the value of legislation to the land use planning process. It is, on the one hand, an exploration of the ways in which legislation serves to provide the structural underpinnings for and connections between the technical disciplines which have long been associated with the land use planning effort.
The Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security explicitly mention pastoralists as users of the Guidelines and as targets of capacity building. Despite the historical and often ongoing marginalization of pastoralists, this technical guide has been developed in response to emerging opportunities to support pastoralists and to strengthen their land and resource rights.

Access to safe water and sanitation and sound management of freshwater ecosystems are at the very core of sustainable development. Geospatial datasets and analysis techniques based on geographic information systems (GIS) have become indispensable tools in the planning, implementation and evaluation of a wide range of development programmes, including actions addressing sustainable agriculture and rural development. The two waves of refugees from the Central African Republic has provoked one of the most severe humanitarian crises in Central Africa and in the South of Chad. The different camps around the city of Goré host a population of more than 90 000 individuals of which 35% are refugees, 21% are repatriates and 44% are autochthones. This population is dependent on woodfuel for cooking, heating and lighting. This has increased pressure on the environment due to tree felling, wood collection and the conversion of forestland to agricultural land.
