The Government extension services in Papua New Guinea (PNG) are weak. There is a general lack of money and staff, and the country has a poor infrastructure. Above all small-scale farmers in remote areas are left out of developments. This applies in particular to women farmers, despite their providing 85 per cent of the rural workforce.

Today, 370 million people live in cities in earthquake prone areas and 310 million in cities with a high probability of tropical cyclones. By 2050 these numbers are likely to more than double, leading to a greater concentration of hazard risk in many of the world's cities. The authors discuss what sets hazard risk in urban areas apart, summarize estimates of valuation of hazard risk, and discuss implications for individual mitigation and public policy.

Cambodia emerged in the early 1990s from 30 years of conflict, the brutal Khmer Rouge era, and a decade of Vietnamese occupation, with one of the world’s lowest per-capita incomes, and with social indicators far behind those of neighboring Southeast Asian countries. Physical infrastructure had been largely destroyed. United Nations intervention led to a peace agreement in 1991, a new constitution, elections, and formation of a coalition government, although a reduced level of conflict and political instability continued until the late 1990s.

The crop wild relatives (CWR) of Papua New Guinea (PNG) constitute an enormous and unique resource of genetic diversity which may be vital for future crop improvement and food security, particularly because they may harbour many valuable traits for agricultural adaptation to changing climate. Yet we know so little about the CWR in a country so biodiverse as PNG. While PNG has attracted much interest from international agencies and NGOs working in the area of biodiversity and conservation, most, if not all, have overlooked the role and importance of CWR.

This paper examines the potential for phosphorus (P) release from intensively grazed pasture to waterways. In particular it describes the P release processes occurring in riparian buffer strips. Soil samples at three depths (0 2.5, 2.5 7.5, and 7.5 15 cm) were collected from riparian buffer strips, including wetland and non?riparian areas at three pasture sites. These soil samples were analysed for total P, plant available P as measured by Olsen P, and soil solution P as measured by 0.01M CaCl2?extractable P.
