The degradation of soils with high sand content, in the southwest of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, is due to the vegetal cover withdrawal, forming sandy areas called "areais", which pose a risk to animal husbandry and the prairie ecosystem. A technique of revegetation with cover crops such as Avena strigosa Schieb. and Lupinus albescens H. et Arn., was developed to reduce the soil particle movement by eolic erosion.

The productivity of different lettuce groups and roquette was evaluated when sown in two different periods and cultivated either singly or intercropped. Theses experiments were carried out in Jaboticabal, São Paulo State, Brazil. The first growing period was from May to August (Autumn-Winter) and the second from September to November (Spring) of 2001. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with four replications. The treatments consisted of the combination of the following factors levels: lettuce groups (crisp, cv. Vera; looseleaf, cv. Elisa; and crisphead lettuce, cv.

The process of natural regeneration in an area degraded for the construction of the Camargos hydroelectric plant dam, MG, was analyzed 155 months after the planting for its reclamation. The analyses were done in function of the distance to the river, soil compaction and distance of the seed sources. The survey of the natural regeneration was done in plots of 2 x 15m allocated every 10m along three transects (15m width and variable length) parallel to the slope direction. All plants with DBH

The vegetation cover plays a key role in protection and conservation of natural resources, particularly concerning soils. This study had as objective to analyze space and time dimensions of anthropic influence on the vegetation cover in part of the semi-arid region of the Ceará State, Brazil. LANDSAT TM-5 satellite images of 1985 and 1994 combined with geoprocessing techniques were used to verify the hypothesis of intensification of environmental degradation. Maps of the vegetation cover, land use, soils, and hydrography were elaborated.

Rural settlements in Brazil were created in order to confront pressures and are characterized by the lack of planning prior to the diagnosis and implementation of the natural resources related to land suitability evaluation, distribution of classes such as topography, rivers system, vegetation, and support mechanisms.

The advance of the agricultural frontier, characterized by the conversion of natural ecosystems into cultivated areas, was intensified in the last decades. Most of the practices used to manage soils cause changes in the soil quality and soil organic matter (SOM) dynamics. Studying the impact of different management systems is essential to choose the most adequate soil management practices.

With the objective of verify the remainders influence of ciliary vegetation and of the human action on the water quality, four springs were studied, with two springs on presence of remaining natural vegetation and two springs with agricultural activities predominance. These springs are part of Córrego Rico watershed, being located in the municipal districts of Taquaritinga and Guariba, São Paulo State, Brazil, in two classes of soil: argisoil and latosoil, respectively.

The objective of this study was to analyze the growth of tree species planted in a topographic gradient in an area degraded for the construction of the dam of Camargos Hydroeletric plant, MG. At 155 months after planting, three transects following the slope, 15 m wide and variable length were allocated, subdivided in parcels of 12 x 15 m along the topographic gradient. Plants with diameter at breast height (DBH) 5 cm were identified and measured (DBH and height).

Remote sensing techniques are mandatory for monitoring land use changes in large areas such as the Amazon. Land use mapping is usually performed by both manual and digital pixel based classification methods which are cost and time-consuming. In this study an image segmentation approach is applied to unmix TM-Landsat images for mapping land use classes in Tucuruí-PA reservoir region to 1996 and 2001.
