Mango Resources Information System was developed for management of phenotypic, genetic, molecular, chemical and other available information on indigenous and exotic mango cultivars. The information system is enriched with 682 accessions with the details of fruit, leaf and other characteristics. It has a collection of 26 expressed sequence tag (EST) and 285 nucleotide sequences present in mango varieties which contains complete and partial genomic sequences having the molecular type, generally genomic DNAs, m-RNAs and unassigned DNAs.

    Martinique

Improving environment quality leads to reduce amounts of pesticides in orchards. Herbicides are the main pesticides used in Martinique. A mechanical weed control is therefore necessary, but costly mainly on sloping lands where brush cutter use is the most effective. An alternative method to control weeds with low labour costs is to integrate animals and cover crop plants in the orchard. This integration may be hazardous and has to take into account the damages caused to the trees by the animals.

The habitats of Sarracenia rubra subsp. wherryi (Wherry’s pitcher plant) and Symphyotrichum georgianum (Georgia aster) have been declining as a result of human population growth, poor land management, invasive exotic species, and fire prevention. Through a partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the Beattie Foundation measures have been taken to protect these species through a propagation and re-introduction program.

    Italie

Nowadays in Italy about 30% of greenhouses are conditioned and a part of them are also monitored by computers that, using specific softwares, are able to control temperature, humidity, CO2 content, intensity and light duration, etc., making the greenhouse microclimate as suitable as possible for vegetable crops and flower needs. Economically, this control and conditioning can be very expensive especially if greenhouses have been localized and built in an area that, for its climatic and/or morphological characteristics, is not appropriate.

The Washington State Department of Ecology (WSDE) has set very strict standards for utilization of both ground water and surface water. In the absence of a valid Water Right Permit rural landowners can only draw up to 5,000 gal per day from a well. In 2009, however, WSDE passed a new law stating that the landowners can capture rainwater (rain water harvesting) from their farm buildings and use it for irrigation purposes, without having to go through the elaborate process of applying for and possibly being denied a Water Right permit.

At present, problems exist in walnut production in China. These include the diversity and at times low quality of available cultivars suggesting a need to simplify types and uses, the prevalence of serious diseases and the susceptibility to late frost damage. Together these are restricting the sustainable development of the industry. In the 21st century, Shandong Institute of Pomology, using intraspecific plus interspecific hybridization breeding and seedling selection, has created a collection of new walnut germplasms.

India has a maximum area (21.6%) under cashew nut and is the third largest producer (17.3%) of raw nuts in the world. The country is the second largest exporter, accounting for 34% of the world’s export of cashew kernels having a comparative advantage in production and processing on account of its cheap and skilled labour force. The yields in India are poor at 860 kg/ha as compared to 4,125 kg/ha in Vietnam and 2,000 kg/ha in Nigeria.

The transition to commercial agriculture is investigated in two communes from three ecological zones (mountain, plains, coastal) in Quang Binh Province, Vietnam. Field investigations were undertaken in late 2006 - early 2007 and again in 2008. One commune in each zone had good road infrastructure and associated market access, while the other had poor road access and was more distant from the market. Two rural households were selected from poor, medium and high wealth categories in each commune, providing 36 case households.

Vegetable production has an increasing importance in most of the Asian countries. The leader in production per capita is China followed by South Korea, North Korea and Vietnam. In Vietnam, vegetable production is at the moment on 4th place of all agricultural commodities. In the past, in Vietnam as in other South-East-Asian countries, the production of rice, sugar cane, cassava and maize often as monoculture was typical.

Vegetables are mostly grown in mountainous areas with an altitude >400 m a.s.l., such as Temanggung, Central Java. The steep slope farming considers very little environmental suitability and sustainability. This study was conducted in 2004, covering a total area of 87,223 ha. Soil samples were analyzed for soil texture, pH, C, N, P, K, CEC, exchangeable cations, and base saturation. Soil characteristics data were used for land suitability evaluation for vegetables crops using the Automated Land Evaluation System (ALES) program.
