This paper examines agrarian policies and practices in terms of how land is linked to many complex social, economic, cultural and political relations. While drawing from upon experiences from Asian countries, the paper is much more than an analysis of Asia’s agrarian reform experience. The paper is a timely resource for policy makers and practitioners regardless of their countries of special concern or responsibility.

[Abstract] If development means the exapnsion of human capabilities, then freedom from domestic violence should be an integral part of any exercise for evaluating development progress. This paper focuses on a hitherto unexplored factor underlying women's risk of marital violence, namely women's property status. Many studies have examined the scale and corralates of marital violence, but neglected this dimension. Based on a household survey in Kerala (India), the authors assess the prevalence and correlates of both phisical and psychological violence - long term and current.

The relationship between migration and deforestation in the developing world continues to receive significant attention. However beyond direct population increase, the precise mechanisms that operate within the intersection of migrant - host land rights remain largely unexamined. Where migrants are provided with land and rights by the state and/or local communities, how such rights are perceived by the migrants is of primary importance in their interaction with land resources, and in aggregate it impacts the development opportunities and environmental repercussions of migration.
