Thailand's economic boom since 1987 resulted in absolute agricultural employment and land use declines. Both were caused by rapid wage growth due to nonagricultural investment. Irreversible land use changes and rapid agricultural mechanization have followed. Following the 1987 financial crisis, agriculture may no longer be able to absorb excess labor or dramatically increase output as in the past.

The emerging biofuel sector has drawn great interest as an alternative source of fuel for transportation. The expansion of biofuels greatly impacts world agricultural markets, since currently, the primary feedstocks for ethanol and biodiesel production are field crops and their derived products. There is great interest in the potential of countries to expand their biofuel sectors through increased production of feedstocks. The long-term potential for developing first-generation biofuels in many countries depends on a large and constant supply of feedstocks.

The Thai cassava production and processing industry heavily depends on the export market, mainly the European Economic Community (EEC). With the anticipated removal of the preferential tariff treatment of Thai tapioca to the EEC, a lower level of importation and/or lower prices for Thai cassava products are imminent. Thai government policy is to reduce the cassava-planted area and help farmers increase productivity. In response to this situation, higher yielding cultivars with higher starch content in the roots are required.
