This work is settled in the context of the Project "Characterization, Cartography and Evaluation of Spanish pastures" (INIA-CCAA OTOO-037-C17). Results of the characterization, cartography and evaluation by means of the phytocenologic and cartographic units established by authors, the II National Forestry Inventory (DGCN, 1996) and the Forestry Map of Spain (DGCN, 2001) are presented. Considering the dominant species provided by the last mentioned work and the phytosociological characterizations, type-inventories are established, which allow an estimation of the pasture production.

The present work aims to illustrate how organic agriculture can be a useful tool for the rural development in general, and particularly, in the Valencian Region. Valencian agriculture has some key characteristics that make it different to the agriculture practiced in other Spanish regions. Such specificity brings about the existence of particular problems which are intrinsic to this region (some, however, are common to all farmers). On the other hand, the common agricultural policy (CAP) has contributed to create other type of social and ecological problems in the European agriculture.

The SIAT is a specialist system for Land Evaluation derived from the MicroLEIS - Land Evaluation Information System developed in Spain. In its first version the 12 variables were adapted and adjusted for tropical conditions as well as the program structure and databank. In that time the field tests showed that the best results were obtained for scales near 1:100.000. In this second version the ranges for each variable were redefine and a communication interface with the GIS IDRISI was introduced, which allowed the exchange of data between the two programs.

The natural regeneration in the dehesa has been object of numerous studies, due to the ecologic and economic importance of such ecosystems. In this work is exposed a test of acorns germination of Quercus ilex L. subsp. ballota (Desf.) Samp, in the North of Córdoba (Spain), under three environmental conditions corresponding to the most traditional land uses of the dehesa: grazing, cereal sowing and fallow, each one with a different vegetal cover. A fourth group of acorns was placed in a tree nursery under controlled conditions.
