European rural areas have changed considerably in the past decades. Agriculture intensified whilst in other areas it marginalized. The rural landscape changed and it will continue to change in future. The forces driving that change are increasingly global by nature: demography, economic growth, climate change and international trade policies. The Eururalis 2.0 project assesses the combined impact of these driving forces. The results are published on a computer based tool to support discussions and to raise awareness of future changes in rural areas.

The spatial fragmentation of different biomass sources in one or more regions makes design and assessment of sustainable biomass delivery chains rather complicated. This paper presents a GIS tool that supports the design and facilitates a sustainability assessment of biomass delivery chains at a regional level, in terms of the regional availability of resources, costs, logistics and spatial and environmental implications. Green House Gas (GHG) efficiency targets are part of it.

The southern and central regions of The Netherlands are part of the Northwest- European Delta Metropolis. The demands placed by modern, urban society on the agricultural sector are numerous. Not only are the environment, animal welfare, and food hygiene and quality at stake here, but also must these demands be met in a period of a structural decline in economic yields and under the permanent pressure of a shortage of available land. Intensification and increase of scale, which have characterized European agriculture for a long time, are set to continue in the future.

This paper proposes a spatial explicit agent-based model to evaluate the impact of agri-environment schemes on the spatial cohesion of agricultural landscapes in the light of habitat network patterns. Networks of nature reserves are being proposed as a solution when the degree of fragmentation is considered to endanger the long-term persistence of species diversity. Agri-environment schemes are supposed to give a positive contribution to these networks.
