[From the BRIDGE website] This Overview Report explains what is meant by gender-sensitive indicators and measurements of change; makes the case for gender-sensitive measurements; and outlines how to go about measuring in practice. It includes sections that focus on measuring the impact of gender mainstreaming and on assessing specific areas of gender inequality - such as gender-based violence or the gender dimensions of poverty. A range of international measurement instruments are discussed, including widely recognised goals and indices, as well as innovative new approaches.

[From the BRIDGE website] Gender-sensitive measurements are critical for building the case for taking gender (in)equality seriously, for enabling better planning and actions by gender and non-gender specialists, and for holding institutions accountable to their commitments on gender equality. Yet measurement techniques and data remain limited and poorly utilised, making it difficult to know if efforts are on-track to achieve gender equality goals and commitments.

Urban land markets have a profound effect on how well poor households are able to access the jobs, amenities and services offered in the city. But often the way in which this market works frustrate attempts to open up better located living and business opportunities for poorer urban households and communities, despite government policies and programmes intended to address these challenges. The challenge in South Africa is even larger because of worsening poverty and inequality, and the continuing growth of cities through urbanisation.

[via UN-HABITAT] How can we judge if a land tool is responsive to both women and men’s needs?

Despite progress on women’s rights, rights to land and security of tenure are not enjoyed equally by women and men in many parts of the world. This goes against international human rights, and also impacts negatively on households and the economy.

    The Rangelands Observatory

The International Land Coalition (ILC) believes that a fair and effective monitoring of ongoing conversion and fragmentation of rangeland ecosystems is needed in order to provide a thorough understanding of the trends and their implications – and also to enhance informed and participatory decision making on land use and investments in rangelands, and on the trade-offs involved.

To this aim, a Rangeland Observatory (RO) project has been established.
