The population of Africa’s cities is growing rapidly. But as poor people cram into towns and cities characterised by limited, weak and often under-resourced infrastructure, they are increasingly relegated to marginal, inadequately serviced, informal settlements and low-cost housing areas, leaving them vulnerable to numerous livelihood, health and security risks.
From 25 January to 5 February 2016, the Land Portal hosted a discussion on the Gender Evaluation Criteria (GEC), a flexible framework comprised of 6 criteria and 22 evaluation questions with possible indicators that can be adapted to a wide range of different situations that were developed as a flagship tool of the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN) and its partners, and have been piloted and disseminated among a wide range of stakeholders at global and country level since 2007.
Encroaching on Land and Livelihoods examines whether national expropriation laws in 30 countries across Asia and Africa follow the international standards established in Section 16 of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries, and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGTs). Section 16 of the VGGTs establishes standards on expropriation, compensation, and resettlement to ensure tenure security and responsible land governance. The UN Committee on World Food Security officially endorsed the VGGTs in 2012.
Eight years after releasing its first report on land grabbing, which put the issue on the international agenda, GRAIN publishes a new dataset documenting nearly 500 cases of land grabbing around the world.

L’Amazonie brésilienne, qui abrite la majeure partie des forêts tropicales qui subsistent sur la planète, est rongée par une exploitation économique incontrôlée. Plus de 750 000 km2 de forêts ont déjà été rasés1 , principalement sous l’effet de l’agriculture industrielle, de l’élevage de bétail, de l’exploitation minière, de la construction d’infrastructures telles que des barrages hydroélectriques, de l’exploitation forestière illégale et de l’installation de nouveaux habitants qui découle de ces activités.
