Bhutan is a mountainous landlocked country with a varying climate and rich biodiversity. Despite significant economic progress being made over recent years Bhutan remains a least developed nation with constraints and vulnerabilities adversely affecting its capacity to cope with climate change. The authors recognise that Bhutan’s vulnerability is heightened by low economic strength, inadequate infrastructure, lack of institutional capacity and an agro-based rural economy. Impacts of climate change will have significant implications for the overall development of Bhutan.

Agent-based modeling offers the technical opportunity to spatially integrate biophysical and socio-economic model components, thereby capturing the interactions between agricultural and environmental policy measures, land use decisions and ecological processes. Development paths in the use of resources can be calculated with the help of computer stimulations which determine the range of possible farm adjustments and policy interventions.

Eco-efficiency has emerged as a management response to waste issues associated with current production processes. Despite the popularity of the term in both business and government circles, limited attention has been paid to measuring and reporting eco-efficiency to government policy makers. Aggregate measures of eco-efficiency are needed, to complement existing measures and to help highlight important patterns in eco-efficiency data. This paper aims to develop aggregate measures of eco-efficiency for use by policy makers.

South African president Mbeki has characterised the developmental challenge in his country in terms of integrating the structurally disconnected ‘two economies’. On the one hand the modern industrial, mining, agricultural, financial and services sector, and on the other the ‘third world economy’ found in those urban and rural areas where the majority of poor people live. This draft chapter challenges this characterisation and focuses on the rural dimensions of the ‘two economies’ debate.

This study is an investigation of the process of land conversion from forest to agricultural production, and assessing the factors affecting the process. We also analyze the conditions that would ultimately lead to the EKC type of relationship between deforestation and societal income in an economy.

This paper argues that current forms of agricultural biotechnology have significant potential for developing countries; the challenge is to realize this potential. We develop a conceptual model that explains why the yield effects of GMVs (genetically modified varieties) tend to be significant and reduce chemical use, contributing to human welfare, and present results from empirical studies that support these findings. We demonstrate that the adoption of GMVs might not necessarily lead to elimination of many varieties. Instead, crop biodiversity may be enhanced.

The land fragmentation in Bulgaria is a big problem after the land restitution. As a result of the implementation of the activities according to the Law on Ownership and use of agricultural land, land reallocation plans by Territories Belonging to Settlements (TBSs) were drawn up and came into force for the entire territory of the country. There were established about 10 million land properties, belonging to approximate 2 million owners, which means that the average area of a property is about 0,6 ha, including perennial plantations, meadows, and pastures.
