This paper proposes a spatial explicit agent-based model to evaluate the impact of agri-environment schemes on the spatial cohesion of agricultural landscapes in the light of habitat network patterns. Networks of nature reserves are being proposed as a solution when the degree of fragmentation is considered to endanger the long-term persistence of species diversity. Agri-environment schemes are supposed to give a positive contribution to these networks.

The aim of this paper is to show the consequences of a model extension towards the presentation of by-product in the production of biofuels. By-products can be used as a substitute for feed grain use in livestock production. A boost in biofuel production will also show a strong increase in the availability of by-products. To identify the impact of modelling biofuel production with and without presentation of by-products two different model versions have been applied.

Recently, the world has welcomed its 7 billionth inhabitant. It is expected that we will grow to9 billion persons by 2050. Currently, more than half the world lives in urban areas and urbanisation will continue in the future. Harvard economics professor Glaeser convincingly argues that populations can have magical consequences for business and innovation. At the same time we are aware of the environmental consequences of sprawling suburbs. Thus, sustainability is a core issue for today’s spatial planner.
