Different nutritional deficiencies or toxicities may limit bean development and yield. N and P deficiencies are the most frequent, although deficiency of minor elements and Al/Mn toxicity can reduce yields considerably. Nutritional problems are usually diagnosed by soil and plant tissue analyses and the observation of symptoms produced by nutritional disorders. Optimum pH for bean production varies between 6.5-7.5; within these limits, the majority of the plant nutrients have their max availability. Color illustrations are given of the symptoms of plant deficiencies and toxicities.

Recognizing successful climate-smart agricultural (CSA) practices is not enough for them to be adopted at scale.

At many sites, government or development-led interventions to promote CSA practices face low adoption rates or are not adopted at all.

Data shows that CSA adoption depends on drivers and constraints beyond the CSA practices. Blanket adoption of a specific intervention should never be assumed: the adoption of CSA practices is usually patchy because of many conditions.

The objectives of the diagnosis of bean production are to (1) contribute criteria for the design and completion of on-farm trials of the new bean technology and (2) to take information to research centers that helps define bean research priorities. A summary is presented of the methodology suggested and practiced in national and international courses on on-farm research carried out by CIAT's bean program.

Yield trials with farmers and acceptance surveys were conducted in Colombia in 1969-1970 to assess the potential use of opaque-2 maize in the tropical regons of the country. Yields were variable, particularly from one farm to another. In spite of this variability which may have confused the results, and analysis of variance was applied, using farms as replications.
