The Resident Minister for North West, Madam Isata Abdulai Kamara, District Agriculture Officer, Charles A. Bangura, and 18 chiefs from 13 chiefdoms in Port Loko on Tuesday 25th February 2020, held a one day high profile consultative meeting with the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry at the administrative headquarters in Port Loko. The District Agriculture Officer, Charles A. Bangura welcomed the Minister’s delegation and gave an overview of the purpose of the ministerial visit. He said the time has come to transform the sector and attain increase in crop production and food self sufficiency. The Chief Agriculture Officer, Idara Sherriff, commended the chiefs for their effort to attend the meeting. “The minister was appointed in November last year to achieve rice self sufficiency. This year is a year of accelerated delivery and rice production is our priority”, he said. He called on the chiefs to set politics aside to increase rice production as the stomach does not know political party colour. The government spends huge amount of money on rice importation, “this is just making the Asian farmer rich” he stated. The Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Dennis K. Vandi thanked the chiefs for their presence. He said his ministry has heard their concerns of late supplies of seeds, fertilizers, lack of machines and other farming inputs. He also addressed what the chiefs całled “portfolio farmers”. He said those who exploit farmers will be put out of business under his tenure. He assured the chiefs and farmers of Port Loko of his fullest and continuous support. Chief Pa Alimamy Kamara of Bureh Chiefdom called on the Minister to regulate timber logging in the District. He said those who engage in afforestation should be supported. “I have 200 acres of land to cultivate and we are starting in March. We really need machines and inputs to plow these fields. The Resident Minister for North West, Madam Isata Abdulai Kamara said Port Loko is becoming a savannah unless urgent action is taken to reverse the trend of deforestation. “The area I made my farm was flooded – that the people said they have not ever seen the river overflow its banks and went the opposite direction.
