The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a specialized agency of the United Nations, was established as an international financial institution in 1977 as one of the major outcomes of the 1974 World Food Conference. The Conference was organized in response to the food crises of the early 1970s that primarily affected the Sahelian countries of Africa.

The Institute of Hunger Studies (Instituto de Estudios del Hambre IEH) is a non-profit and independent organization founded in Spain in 2001 with the goal to fight against hunger and improve feeding in developing countries.

In the 1980s, the world renowned entomologist Hans Rudolf Herren saved millions of people in Africa from starving to death by devising organic control methods for a devastating cassava pest.
