The first casualty of any crisis – from Covid-19 to Climate change – are the poor and marginalized. Beyond first response, we need to radically reimagine our cities, reshape our communities for resilience and ready our at-risk populations for the future.

What is the Cities Alliance?

The Cities Alliance is a global partnership for urban poverty reduction and the promotion of the role of cities in sustainable development.

Cities Alliance Members

The Cities Alliance partnership features a broad range of members, including: local authorities, national governments, non-governmental organisations, multi-lateral organisations, and Associate Members. For our current membership, please see Our Members.

What does the Cities Alliance do?

Development Workshop was founded in 1973 and has been a promoter of urban and civic rights for more than four decades. DW is an active member of the African platform of the GPR2C. We have worked with international and African partners during the last 4 or 5 years as advocates for the right to the city in many local, national and international forums. We were instrumental in getting the Angolan Government to support the inclusion of the right to the city in the New Urban Agenda.

Mission

E&U
Environment and Urbanization (E&U) seeks to advance a more socially just and environmentally sustainable urban world through the provision of knowledge. Our focus is the global South, where an estimated one in three of the urban population live in informal settlements and where more than half work within the informal economy. UN projections suggest that almost all the world’s growth in population in the next few decades will be in urban centres in the Global South.

The Muungano alliance represents the combined force of 3 organisations

2. Fund: Akiba Mashinani Trust, the Kenyan urban poor fund

3. Support NGO: SDI Kenya, an NGO providing professional and technical support to the federation
