Impact of adoption of heat-stress tolerant maize hybrid on yield and profitability : evidence from Terai region of Nepal

Abiotic stresses (drought, heat) are one of the major impediments to enhancing the maize productivity of marginal farmers in the facet of climate change. The present study attempts to investigate the impact of heat-tolerant maize hybrid on yield and income in the Terai region of Nepal. This study uses cross-sectional farm household-level data collected in August 2021 from a randomly selected sample of 404 rural households. We used a doubly robust inverse probability weighted regression adjustment method to obtain reliable impact estimates.

Given the challenges brought about by the increasing frequency of climatic stressors (droughts) and other biotic challenges (pests and diseases), breeding for tolerance to these traits is now seen as an indispensable adjunct to the enhancement of yield potential. Drought tolerant (DT) maize varieties that do well under moderate drought and outperform (or do not underperform) commercial checks under normal rainfall are becoming available. This study examines the role of these maize varieties in mitigating the effects of drought on maize yields in drought-prone areas of eastern Uganda.

Socioeconomic effects of Oyo state government COVID-19 palliatives on poultry farmers

Beef value chain situation analysis for Uganda

Beef is a major source of animal protein across the globe and its consumptions increases annually. Globally beef consumption is expected to reach 72 million t by 2025 from 70 million t in 2021 (OECD–FAO 2021). In Africa annual beef production was over 45 million kgs in each of 26 countries (FAOSTAT). In Uganda beef production had highest growth rate of 6.5% between 2001 and 2010 (FAOSTAT) and in 2018 was estimated at 217 million kgs (UBoS 2018). For the past 50 years, beef consumption in Uganda has been growing at a rate of 2%.

Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) walp applications for enhancing soil fertility and crop nutritional qualities: a review

Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Walp is a well-known agroforestry leguminous tree that provides multiple benefits in different agroecological zones. Its apparent versatility is seen in improving animal feed, cleaning environmental wastes, and healing inflammations. It was also found to have significant benefits in agroforestry due to its ability to enhance soil fertility through nitrogen fixation and green manure. However, this article reviews the use of Gliricidia sepium to improve soil fertility and crop agronomic and nutritional properties.
